Understanding Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects the peripheral nervous system, which includes all of the nerves that are outside of the brain and spinal cord. The most common symptom of peripheral neuropathy is pain, but other symptoms can include numbness, tingling, and weakness. In some cases, peripheral neuropathy can be debilitating and significantly reduce the quality of life.

There are many different causes of peripheral neuropathy, including diabetes, certain infections, and exposure to certain toxins. Treatment for peripheral neuropathy often focuses on managing the underlying cause, as well as relieving symptoms with medication or other therapies. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the underlying problem. Regardless of the cause or severity, anyone who is suffering from peripheral neuropathy should work with their doctor to develop a treatment plan that meets their individual needs.
